So it appears that some NLEs aren't including the full 0-255 range that the GH4 puts out, which makes a lot of the footage out there look worse in terms of dynamic range. Check out this video for a quick visual summary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL1yp_Jtyew . Here's a bunch more info: http://vimeo.com/92613144 .

Also, like Panasonic's other G cameras, turning the sharpness all the way down (as well as all or most of the other settings) really helps the image look its best, so keep that in mind if any footage out there looks too video-ish.

Good to know but you would think Panasonic might raise the awareness of this and identify which common NLEs or colour correction software/plugins can convert 0-255 YUV super blacks and super whites to 16-235 RGB.

I remember this has been an issue with at least the cannon dslrs. I don't have the issue in vegas, but I was working with some final cut guys who were. I guess vegas uses it's own drivers where QT drivers seem to re-map the clips to Srgb ( I think ). I remember there was some software available that would re-wrap the clips for macs so that it would see it as 0-255. might be worth googling.

The app for Mac's called 5DtoRGB fixed this issue with camera's like the 5D2 and GH2. Not sure if it supports 4K images coming from the GH4 yet tho. The "Lite" version is free. Might be worth checking out. If it doesn't work maybe contact Thomas at Rarevision and let him know. He is usually pretty good about adding new features to his apps.

Mac App Store link for the "Lite" version:
