There is still a market for such camera. Make it with S16 (or 1") sensor. I would be the first to buy it for docs.

Well I'm looking at an Alexa right now and it 2.8k for $8k

Alexa is way to big in many instances. I would like to see BM making something like Canon XC10, with BRAW and ProRes for documentaries. I can shoot XC10 without being noticed, try that with Alexa. BM is already making UMP, which is a fantastic camera.

The new Pocket camera is 4K for $1300 so.... life is good

I put the Olympus 12-100mm IS on it and it's a nice little run and gun rig

Arggg! Red and their 3K for 3K. Don't even get me started. When they yanked the rug out from under us - I pretty much decided that I would never own anything Red. Blackmagic Design however have delivered such a popular camera (the pocket 4k) that they can't keep up with demand. Maybe Red should have delivered on what they teased us with.

Totally different world back then...people were dropping $40K-$50K-$60K on Betacams that could barely shoot HD.

RED was ahead of its time 10 years ago (and still is with their 8K cameras no matter how necessary they may be), but was a bit overzealous with what I'm sure they WANTED to provide us back then but simply couldn't (for the price). Much easier to do so in 2012+.

However, I do think Blackmagic single-handedly changed the industry and truly forced many to provide more for less.

The 5D Mark II and others (as we know with the GH hacks) could have easily looked better but the Japanese had to protect their cameras (and whether the Keiretsu system existed then (or now) is up for debate). ARRI was out-of-the-question for everyone besides the 1%.

Today, camera production is so shot that everyone is giving away everything they can for ~2000 bucks and just hoping their high-end models catch on with Hollywood.
