  1. #1 Timecode generators and syncing audio
I've been one of those people who has synced audio on waveform for way to long now. I'm finally going to do something about it. Getting ready to pull the plug on a new recorder with timecode onboard. Likely a Zoom 8n. Which of the generators should I get. For each camera the likely candidates are the Tentacle Sync E or the Timecode Systems UltraSync One. I'm leaning to the Ultrasync but would love to get some feedback from those of you using them.

I can't wait to save all that time in post. I should have done this a long time ago.

Another option is to simply jam sync from the recorder. You plug it into each camera at the beginning of the day, or after each break. Done.

Ambient have the best "name" in TC. They make the internal clocks in Alexa for example.

I've been using the Nano's and they work well. The downside of these for me is that they require recharging (internal battery) but they do support this new wireless TC system.

You're just going to PAY for them, especially if you want the battery changeable versions.

These one's above here also generate "gen lock", which matters in multiple cameras for sub-frame phase accuracy.

I've also got a few MOZE TIG 28 clocks and they work great (just uses a AAA battery)

But they also do a smaller cheaper self powered internal battery version.

Lot's of people swear by the tentacle but I've not used them.

I've used the nanos and they synced with the Pocket 4K and UMP very well.

I also have a Tentacle Sync E and its my personal favorite since you can easily use the app to change settings.
If you decide on a tentacle, I'd get the E version.

You can get them new from an authorized seller on ebay sometimes for 10-15% off or if you buy as them as a kit around $220-$240 per unit

But the TC gets out of sync when you turn the camera off, right?

Correct. You simply "jam" again by plugging the output of the recorder into the camera for a few seconds. If your're shooting narative/documentary style, this works great. if you're shooting long form, live events, not so much.

I'd very much recommend the Tentacles.

Also, the software that comes with them is actually supper handy depending on what cameras you end up getting in some workflows.

To be very honest I don't trust jam syncing with cameras once a day, apart from ARRIs. I've found timecode drift problems with most other cameras. I'd always have the sync box permanently attached which is not a problem with the new bread of timecode boxes which are so light and nimble. Definitely never ever trust timecode on REDs, it's proper useless.

If you don't want headaches, always have one sync box straight to camera and one going to the recorder, unless you are using good high end recorders like Sound Devices or Zaxcom which have rock solid timecode.

There are plenty of options for the price now a days though. I think the best contenders are indeed the Tentacles, the Ultrasync one and perhaps worth having a look at the More Gear options, they are built like tanks.
