I imagine the general advice is 'don't save money on stands / buy a Matthews and be done with it', etc. But please could anyone experienced with C Stands cast an eye over this example and let me know if it looks like a good option? It's rather heavier than other more expensive options, but seems to be well built?

I'd avoid those. In the past I purchased off band c-stands and they never lasted. The American Grip or Matthews Avenger are the only ones I've had that hold up. Even the regular matthews c-stands I bought for $120/ea from B&H didn't put up with the abuse.

Agreed. I've had experience with those stands the OP links to, and was not impressed. They seem to turn up under a few different brand names.
My 2c – take your time to look around. In addition to the usual suspects mentioned above for stands and grip, I'd add KUPO as another solid option.

Thanks. Bit puzzled - the Avenger (2033) seems to be listed under both Matthews and Manfrotto. Same stand? Did Manfrotto buy Matthews?

Basically they are basically the same stand deigns and same quality. Not sure about company partnership status.
    Cheers

Keep in mind that Avenger/Manfrotto (both a part of Vitec) grip gear is made in Italy and use the metric system for their hardware, whereas Matthews is American made and use Imperial. So a 1/4"-20 knob on a Matthews would be M6x1 for Avenger/Manfrotto, 5/8"-16 versus M8x1.25, etc. So if a knob breaks, the parts won't be interchangeable between brands.

I would say go with Avenger or Matthews too. But if you are very limited with your budget, Adorama sells their branded Flashpoint C-Stand which is good and can stand, no pun intended, on its quality against the big brands. They are stable and heavy.

I bought 5 Avenger C stands on germanys craigslist variant for 100 ea. They don't come often, but it's worth a try.
