I've not notice this before but maybe its been around for some time.
The other day I bid on a lens and won. When I checked the bid history the next bidder below me actually bid less than the bidder listed 3rd. How is this possible?

You are looking at an auto proxy bid system, and the bids are not in chronological order, but by when the first bids were placed. So bidder two bid a $500 max bid, when the bid was was at 100 and the next bidder (three) bid $200, pushing bidder two’s bid up to $250 or what ever the jump is. The history will show bidder two at $250 while bidder three has $200 for example. eBay is a Proxy bidding system, not an actual auction.

I'm aware of ebay auto bid that automatically put a bid because a bidder's maximum bid is never revealed until the auction has ended for the under bidder. What I'm saying is after the auction has ended, the bid history if the chronological order is to be believed, shows the person placed third has a higher maximum bid than the person placed second? If I had not placed my bid to win the auction will the person placed second wins the auction or will it be the person placed third?

It would be the third bidder with the higher bid amount. The listing is chronological based on when the bid was placed, not by amount bid. So the third bidder had a higher max bid placed than the second bidder had, and you came along and outbid them both.

I also think it would be the third bidder who actually placed a higher bid. I've not noticed this anomaly before, usually the chronological order is from highest to lowest regardless of when a bid was placed. Something ebay has introduce has gone awry.
