Soft, used it just once in a 3 camera setup with Sigma 18-35 and the canon 24-70 II on the other 2 cameras, big mistake and my mistake without testing it properly.

It's possible you got a bad one. It's one of the sharper stills lenses available especially in that range. It's supposed to actually be a good bit sharper than canon's 24-70. The 18-35 definitely is sharper though.

If you are looking for a real run and gun lens, you need a full servo zoom lens in the focal length range of your choice.you do not mention which lens mount UM 4.6 you have, so recommending specific lenses is difficult, as the choices are lens mount dependent. Based on the lenses you are currently using, I would assume a EF mount camera, so the Canon CN zooms are your only real choice in a servo zoom lens.
The obvious choice here would be the 8.2-164mm f/1.9-2.7 HD ENG Zoom Lens, which offers a wide-angle focal length of 8.2mm, zooming down to 164mm, covering most situations.
    Cheers

Sorry for not clarifying but yes I have EF mount. I am looking for something under $2k and can cover super 35mm.

You also may want to look into getting the rare Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70mm f/2.6-2.8 lens. It's basically an Angenieux in disguise. Check Frank's thread on this board. I just got one off eBay for $200.

The tokina 28-70 2.6-2.8 looks very interesting to play with. But how is the Tamron 24-70 2.8 VC on the mini ursa? I think for run gun I'm going to get the tokina 11-16 2.8 or 11-20 2.8 and a 24-70. I really want image stablization. Only Sigma and Tamron make one and early reviews of the Sigma shows it to be not very sharp.

11-16 on that size sensor is pretty wide. If I were going for two lenses I'd choose a wide zoom and a medium telephoto. (17-50, 17-55 and a 50-150 or 70-200). Canon, tamron, sigma all make lenses in this range.

The Sigma 50-150 is one of the sharpest and prettiest lenses I've had the pleasure of using, shame it's discontinued.

As much as I love my AT-X, but if "run&gun" means shoulder work, the Canon 17-55 2.8, with stabilization is my go to lens.
