Thread: version management video and footage

  1. #1 version management video and footage
    My computer system has 5 harddisks, 3 ssd disks and several external harddisks. Which often results in a chaos of copy's. double files and missing files. (because I removed the one which wasn't double on the system).

    Where can I find information about a good workflow and storing clips, projects and drm files. And what is a good way to number the different versions. (version 1 for client, next version with minor changes, version 3 with another change etc.|)

    thnx

    i have several machines all PC. all set up the same;
    - C drive = mirrored 256gig SSD's for systems drive and nothing else
    - D drive = mirrored 2Tb WDRed's for metadata / project data storage
    - S drive = disk array, size depends on the machine, smallest is 8 x 4Tb WDrRedPro's in Raid5, giveing me 28Tb storage, other machines have similar but with 12 disks in the cage
    - Z drive = network attached storage, 64 Tb

    workflow for me is to conform on the assist station, media manage the camera orignals to the network storage, use the DAS on the working machines for source caches @ DNxHR444_HDR

    i use DRP's to move projects between machines, keep drive assigns consistant between them all

    on the local machines i make folders for each project, assign caches and stills there, put any misc media like titles / VFX on the network storoage in an identoicaly named folders

    on each machine i make DRP's constantly, put thsoe into a Resolve Bak folder on D drive, that is backed up every evening to an identicaly named folder on the network storage, and that folder is backed up offsite every night

    so each project has matching folders on all machines, with the NAS keeping the master media, and hte local machines keeping the caches only

    makes deleteing caches / archiveing a project / finding lost bits / managaing data across alot of projects and machines with out a dedicated asset managment system that is overkill for a small shop like mine

    on one machine at home i have made it pretty much identical;
    - C drive = mirrored 256gig SSD's for systems drive and nothing else
    - D drive = mirrored 2Tb WDRed's for metadata / project data storage
    - S drive = disk array, in thsi case it's only 4 x 2Tb WDRedPro's

    i often bring projects home, and use an external drive and mapp it to "Z" as long as it's got the master folder from the NAS i can open a DRP from work and get gong transparently

    i make DRP's several times a day, nameign structure is the same;
    BITS_conform_v001
    BITS_conform_fixes1_v002
    BITS_conform_fixes2_v003
    BITS_conform_sorted_v004
    BITS_color 1st pass_v005
    BITS_color 1st pass_v006
    BITS_color spotting with DP_v007
    BITS_color spotting with DP_v008
    BITS_color notes reel 1_v009

    on and on, typicaly i have around 300-400 DRP's for a feature, when i'm done i clean out all old stills, and ake a DRP with stills and LUT's archive that, clear the rest off the drives, they are archived off site anyway

    as i have them inside DRP's should i need oto refrence them, i delete all but current working timelines and the clean conform tmeline

    Ha, ha, thank you anyway. No I learned some new words. I liked 'Butterflies in the stomach' (is the same in Dutch, 'vlinders in de buik')
