Is the Video Assist 5" worth it if just using for a monitor (not recorder) ? I sometimes like to shoot with my GH4 (don't hate) on some low end /run&gun jobs where I need to just shoot/edit quickly and don't want to fuss with my blackmagic cameras. i thought about picking up a Video Assist because the GH4 has a tiny screen and I'd like to record internally 4k V-log, but still have a larger screen with a LUT applied to see what it'll look like in post.

Any gamma issues with the 5" VA ? Meaning, is what I see what I'm going to get? The VA 5" should work with the GH4 just as a monitor, right?

Thanks for all insight, much appreciated.

It should, and costs less than a SmallHD 501, which is what I use for a monitor on the Micro Cinema camera. The 501 also has LUT support.
    Both should work just fine.

If only someone design something but 10 times cheaper, smaller and HDMI in-out only.

Interesting, have to look more into each of these.

You've definitely got to tweak the VA to get it where you want it. Out of the box it's too bright or maybe the gamma is lifted either way you'll need to test it out with your setup. The LUT support is cool but LUTs look totally different in Resolve than they do on the VA. I could shoot something and make a correction LUT then load it into the VA and see a drastically different image. If you can make it work it is a nice crisp HD monitor, I'm not a fan of touch screens though I appreciate the simple design. Overall my favorite thing is the ease of mounting, 6 1/4-20s mean you can mount it however you like which is kind of a big deal when you're talking about an external monitor.

    Good luck

I would buy the Ninja Inferno for $500 more and call it a day.

So many features and 4K/60p recording for future cameras...especially nice if you one day upgrade to the GH5 (which is pretty much why they made the NI).

The Ninja Inferno is $995, not $500.

You can also get a Video Devices PixE 5H (HDMI) for $1200, used kits on eBay for less. It will also record ful, 4kDCS at higher fps rates than the VA. You also have an great optional audio preamp (LR) you,can add to get direct audio feeds and the ability to match video sync.
Has all the exposure tools, including false color, and a better monitor than the Atomos or VA.
    Cheers
