My most important filter (Heliopan IR filter) got stuck in a step up ring. I can't get it off no matter what. I've tried a plier, rubber bands, nothing! Tomorrow I'm taking it to a store that can deal with this, but in the mean time, are there any methods I could try?

    Thanks

Put in the fridge for 10 min. Then try again. Works all the time for me.
Edit: this looked like a ridiculous tip. Trust me, it's pure physics

Put it face down on a rubber kitchen glove or something like that and unscrew. Since I had this problem I keep that rubber glove in my photo bag.

Try being very gentle when you twist. Push in slightly or pull out slightly and gently twist. Cooling the filter will make things worse as it will contract around the step-up ring. Cool the step-up ring to shrink it.

And in the future buy Heliopan brass step-up rings so the metal filter threads will be much less likely to cause a bind. In the future, don't screw anything completely, leave some slack. Things won't fall off.

Wash your hands and remove as much skin oil as possible. Dry completely. Then, hold the step ring with one hand and gently press the palm of your other hand (not too hard) against the filter. Twist the palm until loose. Works for me every time. Sprinkle a lint-free lens cloth with tap water and clean the filter in a circular motion. Finish it off with a blower.

Filters get stuck whether they're aluminum or brass. I own both types. C'est la vie.

I had this with a variable ND, making it especially difficult. Drove me potty. In the end, the only solution (carried out by a friend with a workshop) was to put everything in a vice, saw across the step up ring, then use this groove to unscrew the ring.
